Yesterday for Today: The Evolution of the Pledge of Allegiance for Such a Time as This
1892: Original Version: "pledge allegiance to my flag and to the republic for which it stands, oe nation, indivisible with liberty and justice for all".
1923: "My Flag" was replaced with "the Flag of the United States" to ensure immigrants were clear about which flag they were honoring.
1924: The words "of America were added to the phrase.
1942: The United States Congress officially adopted the Pledge into the U.S. Flag Code
1954: The words "under God" were added at the urging of the Knights of Columbus and President Eisenhower to distinguish the U.S. from godless" communist nations during the cold war.
May 11, 1954: The Library of Congress recommended the specific phrasing "one Nation under God' (without a comma) to emphasize the nation's religious foundation.
June 14, 1954: President Eisenhower signed the bill into law on Flag Day. This rapid legislative was driven by the intense Cold War sentiment, as American leaders sought to distinguish the United States from the "state atheism" of the Soviet Union.
Eisenhower highlighted this in his signing statement, declaring that adding the words would "constantly strengthen those spiritual weapons which forever will be our country's most powerful resource."
The foreseen actions of yesterday for such a time as this, the presence of today.
1954 Patriotic 'One Nation Under God' Cross-Flag, For Such A Time As This
Made from 100% Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton.
The UniSex Retail Fit: designed to contour to the body more closely, with less bagginess and more form-fitting lines around the shoulders, arms, and torso. The arms have a snugger fit, and the sleeve length tends to be shorter. This is also known as “retail fit,” although it can fall somewhere in between standard and fashion. Given that it is a retail fit, I will add from experience that this contour-fitting tee shirt is comfortable and flattering for all. If you had to choose just one, this is to be seriously considered; it's incredibly popular, fashionable, and washes up nicely for years of wearing enjoyment.
Care Instructions: Machine wash: cold (max 30C or 90F); Non-chlorine: bleach as needed; Tumble dry: low heat; Iron, steam or dry: medium heat; Do not dry clean.
