1945 Iwo Jima dedication to the Men of the First Flag Raising
February 23, 1945, was a pivotal day in history, marking the first flag-raising atop Mount Suribachi. It was a moment of incredible significance not just for the men of Iwo Jima, but for the entire world. The flag-raising symbolized hope, strength, and a turning point in the Pacific theater of World War II.
The first American flag on Iwo Jima was raised on February 23, 1945, when1st Lt. Harold G. Schrier, led the patrol that first climbed Mount Suribachi. Pvt. Philip L. Ward:, helped carry and raise the flag with a piece of pipe. Plt. Sgt. Ernest I. Thomas, Jr., a senior enlisted man who assisted. Sgt. Henry O. Hansen, also helped hold the flagstaff. Cpl. Charles W. Lindberg, participated in the first flag-raising John H. Bradley: Navy corpsman who was part of the team. Pfc. Raymond Jacobs, A radioman on the patrol, and Pfc. James Michels, also involved in securing the flag.
The sharing of these names is to honor the men who played such a crucial role in the historic raising of the FIRST FLAG on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
Their courage and sacrifice are a testament to the bravery and determination of those who fought for freedom.
This initial flag, smaller and hoisted with a pipe, was raised around 10:30 a.m. Later that day, a second, larger flag was raised, which became the subject of the iconic photograph by Joe Rosenthal, though the identities in that photo were later corrected by the Marine Corps
Their actions, immortalized in that iconic photo, have become symbols of sacrifice and patriotism, and they truly deserve recognition for all they did to secure our freedom.
