Living Theme Application: In God We Trust, The battle Hymn of America
The Christian Faith displayed by the Founding Fathers of the United States of America were men with strong religious convictions based on the Bible and faith in Jesus Christ. Of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence, over half (24) had seminary or Bible school degrees.
It is Written: May the LORD bless you and keep you; may the LORD cause His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; may the LORD lift up His countenance toward you and give you peace.’ Numbers 6:24-26 BSB
In God We Trust: The Praying, God-Fearing Founding Fathers
The freedom-reigning, liberty-seeking patriots of the Continental Army, led by General George Washington and allied with France, defeated General Charles Lord Cornwallis and the British army.
Their surrender by the British general at Yorktown paved the way for the eventual president of the Continental Congress, Richard Henry Lee, who wrote in a June 7, 1776 resolution, "These United Colonies are, and of right, ought to be free and independent States." As a result, the United States Declaration of Independence of 1776 refers to "the thirteen colonies, now called the United States of America," marking the first formal usage of the national name, which was officially adopted in 1777 by the nation's first governing constitution, the Articles of Confederation.
This last major land battle of the American Revolution led to negotiations for peace with the British and the signing of the
Treaty of Paris in 1783. The United Colonies, uniting the states, are now known as the United States of America.
Following the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, the American colonies formed a nation but needed a constitution. The previous Articles of Confederation were inadequate.
In May 1787, delegates assembled in Philadelphia for a conference to draft a constitution for a functional federal government.
They nominated George Washington as chair, but that was all they agreed on. From the start, the delegates disagreed on the scope and structure of the new government. From the beginning, the delegates quarreled over deeply held disagreements as to the extent and form of the new government.
Prayer: The Battle Hymn of America, The Role of Faith and The Principle of God's Divinity Unto a Nation
June 28, 1787, Benjamin Franklin quoted the Psalms
It is Written: Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it, Psalm 127:1
Benjamin Franklin’s reference to Psalm 127 highlights the role of faith and principle in the founding of the United States. The delegates understood that building a lasting government required more than political skill; it required a foundation of shared values and respect for higher laws.
This spiritual dimension influenced the Constitution’s emphasis on justice, liberty, and the rule of law. While the document itself is secular, the moral framework of many delegates shaped its principles
